Nash is 2 Years Old!!

I can't believe it.  The day has come that my baby is, ahem, no longer a baby.  Like, officially, people!  There's no mistaking it now...he's a full fledged boy and has the 'tude to prove it!

Here's a rundown of Nash at 2 years old ::gulp::
Height: Just shy of 3 ft (35.75")
Weight: 29.4 lbs
Hair: It's a tad darker now, but still hovering in the dark blonde/light brown category
Eyes: Still hazel
Teeth: He finally has one of his two-year molars poking through!  That makes 17!
Clothes: All 2T
Shoes: Still size 7

Talking:  I had to put this one first because it is, by far, the most noticeable (and amazing) thing about this last month.  He is forming complete, multi-word sentences now and can carry on full conversations with us.  I would estimate that I can understand a good 90% of what he says.  And I swear, he learns so many new words every day that we can't keep up.  He's talking about things he's never seen (like snow) and recalling things that happened way earlier.  Not only recalling it, but he's able to tell us about it later.  He's expressing so much emotion these days, and I can see his little imagination really opening up.  He knows all of his body parts, some colors, can recognize images (and in many cases, name) in his favorite books (even obscure things like sandwich or table and chairs).  And he's learning now the difference between boys and girls (boys have wee wees and short hair...girls have, er, something else and long hair).  He tries to count (really only says two and six over and over again) and repeats things over and over again until everyone acknowledges what he's said.

Personality:  He's still this supercharged ball of hilarious energy.  I swear, if we didn't force him to take naps and go to bed at night, he'd probably just run in circles until he literally passed out in exhaustion.  He's go-go-go all the time, which really wears out whoever is in charge of watching him that day.  He's feisty and funny, yet shy too.  We're starting to notice he gets shy in front of people, and his teachers even pointed out that he prefers to stand in the back of the class to do things like sing or dance.  Funny since he's a total freakin ham when it's in front of people he knows.  Like, he literally shows off and acts up when there's more than one or two of us in the room paying attention to him.

We're still dealing with some anger issues, but I just have a really good feeling all of that will melt away as he continues to learn how to express himself.  He's learning that he's not supposed to hit people (with his hands or toys) and that hurting people isn't nice.  He sees us getting upset and walking away when he is too physical, so I think that's helping.  He still has his freak outs though, and we've all learned to protect our faces when he starts swinging or gets worked up.

Physical:  Oh lordy...there's so much to write on this one, it's hard to know where to start.  From day one, Nash has been this incredibly physical boy.  Even during my first ultrasound, he was flipping and tumbling all around in my belly and the tech could barely get a pic of him!  He was super active while I was pregnant and NEVER stopped moving when he was a baby.  I remember the pediatrician telling us at his 4-month well visit that he was going to be an athlete...that he was already pulling himself up with his own strength and putting weight on his legs.  He sat up at a normal age, but then only a few weeks went by before he was crawling, and then standing up!  And he took his first steps right around 10 months.  And when he went for it...it was 8 steps and he was off.  There was no contemplation...he just did it.  And even now, he continues to amaze us with his physical abilities.

At the playground, he's able to climb every. single. one. of the obstacles.  We were there one day and he could climb up these tricky bars that this little 4-year old boy was AFRAID to climb!  Not my kid...he's completely fearless.  Which scares the everloving shit out of me.

He can throw a ball (any kind of ball, any size) literally RIGHT AT YOU.  I'm telling you, we've stood 5-10 feet apart and played catch (except he can't really catch yet).  He throws a football with a spiral.  And he just got a tee ball set for his birthday and he crushes that ball nearly every time.  We have to quick put the ball on the tee, turn and run so we don't get smacked with the bat.  He kicks...deliberate, timed kicks.  I was sad to learn they don't offer soccer for kids until age 3 because I'm telling you, I think he could do it.  Not to mention, my husband went out and bought Nash a few cheap left-handed golf clubs and cut them down so they're short enough for him to actually use.  And he's able to hit the little golf balls right off the ground.  There doesn't appear to be a sport he (a) doesn't love or (b) isn't good at.

Other notes:  He's become quite attached to his snugglies these days.  Every night and during naptime, his bed is so crowded with friends and pillows that it's nearly impossible for us to lie down with him.  And sleeping is still kind of a struggle...at least here.  When we had our own place and he had his bed, he did really well all on his own.  But once we came here and he has this huge bed, he wants someone to stay with him until he falls asleep.  Which can take FOREVER some times.  He loves trucks of all kinds, legos and anything that plays music.  He's finally over his Yo Gabba obsession and has taken a ravenous fancy to Team Umi Zoomi.  He literally asks for it every second that it's not on.  Thank god for DVR.

His eating is off and on, although he's generally very receptive to new foods.  He regularly eats fish (even salmon and blackened), spicy foods and healthy stuff.  But, just like any kid, he loves crackers, toast, candy, cookies, juice, etc...  We've struggled a bit these last few months because he's having trouble going to the bathroom.  Sometimes he'll go days without pooping and we can tell he's starting to not feel well.  He won't eat, he's irritable...and he tries and tries, but nothing comes out.  We've completely eliminated bananas and cheese and have cut out all but a splash of juice in his water.   We try to make sure he gets a lot of whole grains and fiber, but nothing really seems to be working.  Next stop:  doctor.  But when he does eat, he uses a spoon and fork nearly perfectly (left or right handed).  He can drink from a cup, but tends to spill it while walking around, so we still give him sippies.  The high chair is completely gone...it just sits in this old red, wooden chair Joe's mom has and eats at the table just like the rest of us.

The other funny thing is how much he has taken control over his outfits.  He's begun requesting certain jammies (loves baseball ones and the ones with rockets or puppies) and won't wear anything else if he happens to see them in the drawer.  Also, he picks out his own shoes every morning and then Joe or my mother in law will form an outfit around the shoes.  Sounds awesome, right?  Well it would be if he didn't pick the same orange and brown pumas all the time.  He loves those shoes, but we are running out of brown and orange outfits to go with them!  He's can just about undress himself, although pulling shirts over his head is still tricky.  He's learning how to put his clothes on, but that's taking a bit longer that the undressing part.  He can pull his pants up, but he usually ends up only pulling up the front.  And we're teaching him to find the big hole for his head and the small holes for his arms, so he's getting it.  Still hates it when we make him get dressed though...he'd run around naked all the time if he could.

No improvements in potty training.  He's only slightly interested in the idea and doesn't sit on the potty for more than 30 seconds at any given time.  He knows when he's going to pee though, so we're gently informing him about peeing on the potty...and tonight I even threw a few cheerios in the toilet and told him to squirt them with his pee.  He giggled and seemed to like it, but no action occurred.  Oh well...it will come.

There's so many more things to share, but it's late, this post is long and I still need to find our Elf, Choo, a resting place for the night.

Love you, big man!

A Toddler is Born - The 12-Month Post!

I don't even know where to begin. My baby, my sweet little man, is no longer a baby! He's all growed up! Hard to believe that now I officially have a toddler and am no longer eligible to use the "I just had a baby" excuse. Time sure has flown by!

The plan is to do a video blog (or vlog for you web peeps) every month now instead of the usual photo dump post. That being said, however, I plan to overload you with pics from this weekend since you really are only 1 once, and it's truly monumental, and damn it, he looked so cute in his little outfit. So here goes:

On Saturday, we hit up not one, but two birthday parties! First up, our friend Chase turned one! Unfortunately, there were so many people and kids there that I didn't even think about taking pics (we were chasing after Nash the whole time). It was this totally cute Polar Express theme too!

After staying about an hour, we headed back up to Gymboree for Daniel's 1st Birthday party! Gymbo the Clown had just made her appearance by the time we got there, so timing was awesome!

Isn't their pilot theme just too cute?! Love the banner! And Daniel is such a sweet boy, we were so excited to be a part of their day.

The next morning, we were up bright and early! After an impromptu rendition of Happy Birthday first thing in the morning, we settled in for a special breakfast of orange-glazed cinnamon rolls (he actually didn't like them that much).

Around 1 pm, the kiddos started arriving and it was game time. Nash had so much fun with all his little friends, and it was good to catch up with some of the adults.

His friend Cooper (2) showing his how to master Thomas the Train!

The little man rocking his DIY Darth Vader cape and his tee! Best craft project ever...wish I had better pics, but it's awesome!

Unfortunately, when we opened the box for his smash cake, it had fallen over! I guess they put too much raspberry filling and the top 3 layers detached from the bottom layer and it totally slammed into the side of the box. After I had a fit because I had planned on displaying it and yadda yadda, Joe's mom managed to smear it back together. Bubs didn't know any different, so all was well.

Who needs hands?!

The money shot.

Joe, Nash, Chase, and Jeff.

All the kiddos loved this Elmo plane that my BFF Mindy had sent all the way from Iraq!

Linish is practicing for his own big day (not really...)!

The next day, we hit up the pediatrician's office for his one-year well visit. It's always so great to check in with the doctor and see how he's measuring up and ask her questions (especially now that we only go every 3 months).

This was the first time he was able to just cruise around the exam room while we waited for them to come in, and he was loving it. Especially dragging the toys around the room...

All these shots were pre-vaccinations - which never goes well. He got three shots in one day - poor thing! And it was not pretty. I know there's a lot of debate out there about vaccines and whatnot, but we've chosen to follow dr's orders since she seems really knowledgeable and we can tell she cares a lot about taking care of babies.

Here are his 12-month stats:

Height: 31.75 inches (97th percentile)
Weight: 23 lbs 12 oz (75th percentile)
Prognosis: Perfect!

She recommended we start giving him vitamins and that he see a dentist as soon as possible, since he is rocking 8 teeth now!

He could be the next Abercrombie model! Rocking the nothing-pack abs! Joe always jokes that he looks just like the e-Trade baby, which totally weirds me out since that baby is tad creepy.

Vlog post coming soon!

Week in iPhone Pics #18

What a crazy week!  I knew that since I had drill last weekend and Bub's birthday party was this Sunday that it was going to be crazy, but wow.  I'm exhausted and the week's just starting.  I need a vacation...too bad I used it all in August (which got messed up thanks to a hurricane randomly hitting the northeast).  Shoutouts to Amy for starting this cool linkup...   If you like this puppy, head on over to a good life...it's full of goodness.

Get ready, here comes the week:

Sunday was the last day of drill until February!!  But that meant a whole weekend of briefings..ugh!  I tried really hard to stay awake, but it truly was death by powerpoint. I eventually had to sneak out to try and get some actual work done.

That night, I was so sore from the PT test on Saturday and exhausted from the week in general (plus Joe had to work a charity event at the bar), so I crawled into a hot bath with leftover Chipotle and my phone.  #perfection

Back to work, back to work, work, work, work, work!  Monday I spent quite a bit of time at the front desk because Mel had a little car trouble and couldn't make it in.  That meant lots of selfies, for sure.

After work, we met Joe's parents at our favorite sushi restaurant where Bubs annihilated all the food we brought, then proceeded to go buck wild.  After wrangling him into the car to get home for a bath, we remembered that TWO boxes had come from my friend Mindy and were waiting to be opened!  She had her mom sent Nash a birthday and a Christmas gift all the way from Iraq!  That's friendship, people!

The time was c.r.a.w.l.i.n.g. on Wednesday (especially those last 11 minutes), so I tried to pass the time by taking weird selfies.  This is what goes on in radio...didn't you know?

Daddy was working again, so Bubs and I had dinner and snuggled a bit before calling it a day.

Thursday was a play place day!!  Bubs is really starting to attack that place...he sprawled all over the plane, then took over the toy section.  He was playing with the older kids even, although some of them were running him over.  He finally decided it was cool to push the stroller himself (I have been waiting for this day), so it took us quite a while to get back to work.  I spent the rest of the day perfecting the invite for our company Christmas party (can you say "last minute"?).

Once again, there was a giant box waiting when I got home.  This time, Nash's Aunts had sent this incredible wooden table and chairs with sports stuff all over them!  Nash just had to help daddy get it put together THAT NIGHT.  And he totally took to the chairs and has been crawling (and standing) all over them ever since.  Thanks Aunt Geega and Aunt Paula!

Friday Nash decided he would rather eat his birthday cards then read them, and I figured there must be fiber in them or something, so why not.  After dinner, we snuggled on the couch for some Yo Gabba, and then I picked up a bit while Bubs sat in the corner and read his books (when did this start happening?).

Since Joe was at work (again), I stayed up late getting the house ready for the big weekend and even knocked out the foam lightsabers for the party (which were a hit, I might add).   Thanks to Pinterest for that idea!

I'm so bummed I didn't take any pics at the first party we went to!  Ok, let me back up.  Saturday we had not one, but two birthday parties to attend!  And they were both at the same time!  First, we headed down south to our friend's Amanda, Jeff, and Baby Chase for his first birthday.  They had this awesome polar express theme and tons of kids, good food, and fun times (which is why I'm bummed I didn't take pics).  And to be honest, the pic from Stacie, Daniel, and Baby Daniel's party above - Joe took it.  Yep, bad mother.

I did, however, manage to take pics of Joe and I on our margarita date (priorities, I tell ya!)...

So that's the week!  Look for the post with birthday party and ONE YEAR update pics coming soon!

11 Months on 11/11/11

It must be lucky to turn 11 months on 11/11/11, right?!  My sweet little man is almost one, and I'm truly excited for him.  He's grown and changed so much since last month's post, and I hardly see the baby that I once held in my arms.  He's now a boy!  And a big boy at that!

This kid loves to explore!  Loves books, Yo Gabba, and trucks!  He babbles nonstop, and wears his emotions on his little sleeve.

He's so much fun to interact with now, as he loves to play games. He will race you, play peek-a-boo, and wrestle! His giggles are undeniably infectious, and every where we go people say how cute he is.  Like I said last month, he's such a boy!  He's rough and loud and messy...and loves to get physical with us (just ask...we have the bruises/scratches/bite marks to prove it).

He's a good sleep, a great eater, and thrives on routine. I feel like he misses me now when I leave for work, and is much more clingy when I am home. Our nighttime routine (bath, books, milk, and a cuddle) is the absolute highlight of my day, and I feel like he really enjoys it too.

I love you, little man!  Can't wait to see what your last month of "babyhood" have in store!

My 30-Before-30

image via

I have heard a lot about these kinds of lists, and I thought it would be great to put one together!  In case you haven't heard about it, the gist of it is to compile a list of all the things you want to do/experience/accomplish before your 30th birthday.  Some people do them right after they turn 20 and give themselves a decade (their lists usually have more difficult goals on them), but a lot of people do what I'm doing - they make their list the day after they turn 29 in an effort to make their last year as a 20-something more meaningful and productive.

Basically, I just want to make sure I don't turn 30 and say, gee, I wish I had done that in my 20's.  So, without further ado...here is my list:

  1. Run a half-marathon
  2. Start a retirement account
  3. Get paid for photography  (one photo, one session, whatever...)
  4. Sew an outfit I'd wear in public
  5. Take Nash to see the snow
  6. Bake and decorate a multi-layer ombre cake
  7. Capture a great "fireworks" photo
  8. Take part in a haunted house
  9. Go on a big family vacay
  10. Visit a foreign country (kind of a gimmee since my unit is going to Japan in Jan)
  11. Start a business
  12. Get paid to design something (biz cards, flyers, logos, invitations, whatever...)
  13. Take a real roadtrip somewhere new and random
  14. Can something I grow or make myself
  15. Try bikram yoga
  16. Begin composting
  17. Kick my sugar habit
  18. Set up and maintain a photo archive system
  19. Do a mud/fun run with a group of friends
  20. Go on an adults-only cruise
  21. Complete a 30-day photo challenge
  22. Buy a new house (near a playground)
  23. Master the perfect sourdough bread recipe
  24. Start a family tradition
  25. Perform a full pull-up unassisted (might be easy for some, but I've never been able to do it)
  26. Meet Giuliana Rancic and tour the E! Networks building (ok, this may be dreaming)
  27. Build Bubs a sand box from scratch (no plans, no kits)
  28. Donate 10 hours of time to either a kids' charity or an animal shelter
  29. Learn how to swim
  30. Have an awesome 30th birthday party
Ok, there it is, people.  In black and white.  Guess that means I have to stick to it, huh?  This is harder than New Year's Resolutions!!  Wish me luck!

Letters to Nash - 9 Months

Dearest Nash,

Such a crazy thing to be celebrating such a joyous occasion on such a sad day…10 years ago Monday the towers of the World Trade Center came crashing down thanks to a group of terrorists that have continued to affect our country this entire decade.  I am thankful you did not have to experience this horrible event, even though I know your years will likely feature a tragedy all their own.  But it’s your birthday nonetheless, so on to happier things.

My god you are amazing!  I’m truly stunned by how smart you are and all the skills you’ve picked up in the last few months.  You are standing, cruising, and falling like a pro!  I have no doubt that walking is in your near future, and although that thought frightens me (child-proofing!!), I’m excited to hold your hand as you take your first steps through life.  You love to explore and learn, so you’ve been crawling at warp speed whenever anyone puts you down!  You’re grabbing things, conquering obstacles (like Mama’s legs), and still love to jump, jump, jump.  You’re totally fearless and have come dangerously close to launching off the couch (and even out of our arms).  Couple that with your incredible baby strength and we are some tired parents!!  Most importantly, you have learned how to give kisses!  It’s the highlight of my day, every day, to get a kiss from you.

You have 6 teeth now!  You chew like a pro and seem to prefer the chunkier foods over that overly processed mush that we sometimes try to feed you.  You love pasta with tomato sauce, wheat toast with butter, fruit, and your little baby snacks.  But you eat pretty much everything we give you.  You are learning to use the sippy cup (but still don’t like it much), and have taken to needing a drink after every few bites (washing it down).  You are drinking about 24 ounces of milk a day now, but some days you seem to care less!

You’re such a good sleeper!  You even managed to nap on the plane both ways when we went up North to see the family!  You sleep 10-12 hours at night (although you usually wake up at least once for about 2 ounces of milk…might be more habit than hunger) and take two 1-2 hour naps a day.  You thrive on schedules, and we try not to make your days too crazy so as to throw you off.   Our nighttime routine is still the same as it’s always been, with bath time, a bottle, stories, singing, and rocking.   When it’s bath time and the water is running, you know it’s time to get undressed, so you help Mama take your shirt off!  Those 30-40 minutes at night are the best for Mama because it’s time she gets you all to herself and we get to sit and cuddle.  Sometimes it’s tough though because you like to fight diapers, clothes, and stories all the time…

You don’t really have a favorite toy, but you sure do love to play with all of them!  You literally crawl from one toy to the next almost the whole time you are in your play area…and every now and then stop to look out the window or play with one of us.  You like to “take everything with you”…often holding an arm or a tag in your mouth with the rest of the toy dragging behind you as your crawl.  You have become quite attached to your blanket and know that when you get it (and the binkie), it’s time for bed.  Mama and Daddy have limited the binkie to sleep time because you were REALLY starting to get attached to that.

As we prepared for your first holiday season, Daddy and I are so excited for all the things we will get to do.  We’re excited for you to experience your first Halloween, eat your first Thanksgiving dinner, and celebrate Christmas for the first (real) time.  We are also beginning to plan your first birthday and can’t believe you are already nine months old!  I know there are other things I want to write in here, but this letter is already so long and I can hardly remember all of the amazing things you do every day.

Love you more than life,
Mama and Daddy
